I heard an interesting perspective on WGN radio this afternoon. It was a short discussion, but it made a good point. The discussion was basically about Cubs managers losing heart after becoming frustrated with managing the Cubs in their old age. Look at it this way, the Cubs have not won a World Series in almost 102 years. This has got to be the most daunting and pressured task in professional sports. Now there is no excuse for Dusty sitting on his ass after the Bartman ball and the subsequent Alex Gonzalez error. He should have come out and talked to Prior. With that aside, the Cubs performed decent until September of 2004 until several losses in close games dashed their playoff hopes. We all remember Dusty's heated debates with Steve Stone, and it is believed that Dusty's excuses and comments led him to quit the Cubs. Dusty continues to manage the Cubs into two more disappointing seasons until his contract is finally allowed to expire in 2006. By the end, Dusty's motivation, effort, and ability to give a damn, what little they were to begin with, were essentially zero in the end. Now we come to Lou Piniella, a manager who is responsible for back to back division championships and first-round playoff debacles. One was a rebuilding year after Dusty, the next was a stellar year in which the Cubs offense was unstoppable for the most part until the playoffs. Now this season, about 2 weeks before the All-Star break, Lou has been known to show his frustration in press conferences with lines like "What can I do? They just aren't hitting." and similar questions. I did like what he did with Bradley today with the exception of allowing him in the lineup tomorrow. But lately he has been acting as frustrated as Dusty did. All of a sudden, this team has turned Lou into the new Dusty. I do think we will need a new manager, one with stronger will and younger age, who focuses on the fundamentals.
